Folk Festival in Jurmala – Maslenitsa
On 26th February, the Slavic festival — Maslenitsa — that regroups numerous customs brought together guests and Jurmala residents in the medical SPA « Jantarnij Bereg». Members of Diplomatic Economic Club with their family took part in this festival and discovered its traditions.
Above all, Maslenitsa celebrates the end of the winter and welcomes the new and warm spring.
The main characteristics of the Festival in Jurmala were a folklore program, the Maslenitsa effigy, a six-meter column with valuable prizes that interested people tried to catch by reaching the top! A fair of souvenirs and delicatessen, animals that you could ride, Harlequins — people on stilts, Russian and Gipsy music bands. It is Maslenitsa.
It would not have been possible to celebrate such winter folk festival without round and hot blini with caviar, a salmon, honey, sour cream, jam, etc., or without «kalatches, kringle and prianik», doughnut and «oladi», tea from samovar or other dishes from Russian and Latvian cooking that were present during the festival.
«Blini» — pancakes — are round and similar to the sun that every day extends its light. During the festival, when Maslenitsa effigy is burnt, it becomes clear to everyone that the spring is coming !
